Arimidex
® (
anastrozole) is a drug used to treat
breast cancer. Specifically, this medication is used in postmenopausal women who have:
- Early breast cancer that is hormone receptor-positive
- Advanced or metastatic breast cancer that is either hormone receptor-positive or the hormone receptor status is not known
- Advanced breast cancer that has not responded to tamoxifen (Nolvadex®, Soltamox®).
Arimidex works by blocking certain enzymes in the body that produce estrogen. By decreasing estrogen production, it can help slow down the growth of breast cancer.
Although the medication is generally well tolerated, it is not suitable for everyone. Before taking Arimidex, make sure your healthcare provider has up-to-date information on your medical history and a list of your current medicines. In particular, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you have certain health problems, such as
osteoporosis or
high cholesterol.
