Tamoxifen Citrate Drug Information
Tamoxifen citrate (Nolvadex®) is used to treat and prevent breast cancer. It comes in the form of a tablet or liquid, and is typically taken once or twice a day. Before beginning treatment with tamoxifen, make sure your healthcare provider has information on any other drugs you are taking (including nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements), as well as any other medical conditions you may have.
Although tamoxifen has been shown to be effective, it is not suitable for everyone. For instance, tamoxifen may not be safe for people who have a history of blood clots or strokes. Also, you may not be able to use tamoxifen if you are taking an anticoagulant ("blood thinner") or certain other drugs.
Although most people tolerate this medication well, tamoxifen can cause side effects. Some of the common reactions to this medication include nausea, hot flashes, and vaginal discharge.
