Femara and Breastfeeding

It is unclear if Femara passes through breast milk in humans and what its effects, if any, may be on a nursing infant. However, since the drug does affect hormones, it could potentially cause serious side effects to a young infant. Because everyone's situation is different, you should be sure to talk with your healthcare provider about Femara and breastfeeding so that the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.

 

An Overview of Femara and Breastfeeding

It is not known if Femara® (letrozole) passes through breast milk. However, because of the potentially serious side effects that could occur in the nursing infant, the manufacturer of the drug recommends that it be used with caution in breastfeeding women. The manufacturer also reminds healthcare providers that Femara is approved only for use in postmenopausal women. You should let your healthcare provider know (prior to taking Femara) if you are breastfeeding or thinking of breastfeeding.
