Gemzar and Breastfeeding

Due to the potentially serious side effects of Gemzar, the drug's manufacturer recommends that women avoid breastfeeding while taking it. However, no studies have been done to see if Gemzar does pass through breast milk. It is important that you talk with your healthcare provider about Gemzar and breastfeeding for your particular situation, since everyone's situation is different.

 

An Overview of Gemzar and Breastfeeding

It is not known if Gemzar® (gemcitabine) passes through breast milk. Because of the potentially serious side effects that could occur in the nursing infant, the manufacturer of Gemzar recommends that women should not breastfeed while taking Gemzar. Therefore, make sure to let your healthcare provider know (prior to taking Gemzar) if you are breastfeeding or thinking of breastfeeding.
 

What Does the Research Say About Gemzar and Breastfeeding?

No studies have been done to see if Gemzar passes through breast milk in humans. Because Gemzar can cause very dangerous side effects, it is generally recommended that women stop breastfeeding while taking Gemzar. If your healthcare provider recommends taking Gemzar while breastfeeding, be sure to watch for any side effects in your child.
