Risks With Herceptin

Herceptin^® (trastuzumab) -- a medication used to treat breast cancer or stomach cancer -- is generally safe and well tolerated. However, this does not mean that Herceptin is free from risk. Side effects are possible, and some people may not be able to take this drug.

 

In clinical trials, for example, commonly reported side effects of Herceptin included weakness, nausea, and headaches. While these are often mild and easily treated, there is risk of potentially serious reactions with this drug, such as difficulty breathing, unexplained swelling, and an irregular heart rhythm.

 

To minimize your risk of problems with Herceptin, tell your healthcare provider about any other medical conditions you have. If you have heart disease or lung problems, for example, your healthcare provider may want to use a different stomach or breast cancer medication.
