Breast Cancer Home > Arimidex vs. Nolvadex

Practical Considerations When Comparing Arimidex and Nolvadex

Arimidex is a newer medication (there is no generic Arimidex available) and is significantly more expensive than Nolvadex. Because Nolvadex is older (and generic Nolvadex is available), it is much more affordable. In addition, insurance companies may not cover Arimidex for off-label uses (such as in men or premenopausal women), although policies vary. Some women feel more comfortable taking Nolvadex, as it is a trusted medication that has been used for years. However, other women choose Arimidex because it is newer and may be more effective. You and your healthcare provider should discuss the pros and cons of each breast cancer medication before deciding which one is best for you.
