The two primary types of breast cancer are invasive and noninvasive. Invasive breast cancers make up 70 to 80 percent of all breast cancer cases. The most common type is infiltrating ductal carcinoma (also called invasive ductal carcinoma). The word "invasive" refers to the fact that the cancer has spread to surrounding tissue.
Noninvasive breast cancer, on the other hand, has not yet moved into the surrounding tissue, which usually leads to a more favorable prognosis. Common noninvasive breast cancer types include intraductal carcinoma, also known as ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), and lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS).
