Breast Cancer Home > Generic Docefrez

Although all of the patents for Docefrez have expired, there are no generic versions available at this time. However, docetaxel, the active ingredient in Docefrez, is also the same active ingredient in another medication called Taxotere. There are generic versions of Taxotere available. While docetaxel is sometimes referred to as a "generic name" for Docefrez, it is not a generic version of the drug.

Can I Buy Generic Docefrez?

Docefrez™ (docetaxel) is a prescription chemotherapy medication approved for the treatment of certain types of breast, prostate, and lung cancer. It belongs to a group of medicines known as taxanes.

Docefrez is made by Sun Pharmaceutical Ind., Ltd., for Caraco Pharmaceutical Laboratories, Ltd. It is currently not available in generic form in the United States.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

It is difficult to say for certain when generic Docefrez will become available. There are no patents or exclusivity rights protecting the medication from generic competition, so a generic manufacturer could make a generic version.

It is important to note, however, that Docefrez contains the same active ingredient as Taxotere® (docetaxel). Taxotere is available in generic form.

Is Docetaxel a Generic Docefrez?

No -- docetaxel is the active ingredient in Docefrez, but is not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name."

The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version, the original medicine must have gone off-patent, and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
