Most people tolerate tamoxifen citrate (Nolvadex®) well. However, this breast cancer medication is not suitable for everyone. For example, some of the dangers of tamoxifen include potentially serious side effects. Make sure to notify your healthcare provider right away if you experience problems such as:
- Chest pain
- Difficulty breathing
- Unexplained swelling.
In most cases, side effects of tamoxifen tend to be minor and are generally easy to treat. Some of the most common side effects of the medication include but are not limited to:
- Hot flashes
- Vaginal discharge.
Other potential dangers with tamoxifen include drug interactions and allergic reactions. Also, you may not be able to take tamoxifen if you have had a blood clot or are taking an anticoagulant ("blood thinner") medication.
