Is It Safe for Children to Use Thioplex?

Thioplex has not been adequately studied in children, and is not approved for use in this age group. This does not mean, however, that the medication cannot be used in children. In fact, Thioplex is sometimes used off-label for the treatment of certain childhood cancers. Talk to your child's healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of using this medication in children.

Can Older Adults Use It?

Older adults can use Thioplex. Clinical studies did not include enough older adults to determine if they would respond to the medication any differently than younger age groups. In general, older adults may be more sensitive to the effects of this medicine and, therefore, may need to be started on lower doses and monitored closely for side effects.

Off-Label Thioplex Uses

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend this medication for treating something other than the conditions discussed in this article. This is called an "off-label" use. Thioplex may be used off-label in the following ways:
  • To treat leukemia
  • To treat certain cancers in children
  • To prepare the body for a bone marrow transplant
  • To treat brain tumors.
