Zoledronic Acid Dosing

General Information on Dosing With Zoledronic Acid

Considerations for people taking zoledronic acid include the following:

  • The medication comes in injection form. It is given through an IV by your healthcare provider, usually at a hospital or clinic. The zoledronic acid IV should be given over a period of at least 15 minutes (giving it too quickly increases the risk of kidney problems).

  • For high blood calcium or Paget's disease, zoledronic acid is given as a single dose (although in some situations, retreatment with zoledronic acid may be necessary). For osteoporosis, it is given as a yearly dose.

  • For preventing bone problems due to multiple myeloma or solid tumors, zoledronic acid is given once every three to four weeks.

  • It is important that you get enough calcium and vitamin D while taking zoledronic acid.

  • It does not matter if you take zoledronic acid on an empty or full stomach.

  • It is very important that you are well hydrated before receiving your zoledronic acid dose in order to protect your kidneys. Make sure to drink enough fluids in the days before your zoledronic acid dose. In many cases, your healthcare provider may need to give you IV fluids to make sure you are hydrated enough.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to zoledronic acid or your zoledronic acid dosage, please talk with your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. Do not stop taking the drug without first discussing it with your healthcare provider.
